The term, “inspire,” comes to English from Latin via French, meaning to fill or breath into. The original context was religion, inspiration being the influence of the divine. How do the divine powers inspire in your campaign world?
Here are some options for how a god might inspire a hero:
| 1d6 | Method |
|---|---|
| 1-2 | Dreams |
| 3-4 | Omens |
| 5-6 | Visions |
Inspiring through dreams
Through a sleep-induced state, the god sends prophetic images.
Inspiring through omens
The communicates through manipulations of natural phenomena, such as clouds, bird formations, or the patterns objects make on the ground.
Inspiring through visions
The most powerful inspiration often comes from the waking vision, in which the god induces an ecstatic state directly in the recipient.
From inspiration to action
However the inspiration arrives, it is up to the recipient how to receive it and act upon it. Take care not to use it to overtly direct your players. The inspiration should be mysterious, enigmatic, and open-ended. Whether the outcome is triumph or tragic, the best inspirations still ring true!
