Flavor of the Moth

I haven't had the stomach yet to watch Delicious in the Dungeon (aka Dungeon Meshi) but I've heard enough about it to know that eating monsters is a major element of the anime (and manga). Knowing nothing about it works in that universe, I thought it might be fun to throw together some tables to be used the first time a brave adventurer decides to take a culinary tour of the mythic underworld.

Taster's Choice

The first time a character decides to eat the remains of a creature, roll on these tables to determine aspects of that creature as a meal. First, what does it taste like?

1d6Flavor Profile
1Tastes like chicken
2UMAMI!
3Sweet
4Sour
5Bitter
6Bile with vomit-like notes

What's the texture?

1d6Texture
1Wood or bark
2Lean meat
3Fat meat
4Fat
5Gelatinous goo
6Grit, sand, or gravel

What's the nutritional value?

1d6Nutrition
1It's poisonous (no really, you just ingested poison, roll on the deleterious effects table!).
2Absolutely nothing.
3Average daily serving of protein, fiber, etc.
4Above average daily serving (can replace 2 meals with one serving)
5Unhealthy but fine in limited amounts.
6Seriously unhealthy (roll on the lingering effects table!)

How must it be prepared? Some sort of language skill can be checked to determine this before any food prep is done. Failure to prep it in the prescribed way will introduce a deleterious or lingering effect when consumed (roll 1d6: 1-4, a lingering effect; 5-6, a deleterious effect).

1d6Preparation
1Raw.
2Boiled for 1d3x10 minutes.
3Grilled for 1d3x10 minutes.
4Baked for 1d3 hours.
5Infused (drink as a beverage from the juices mixed with boiling water); cooking time as per boiled.
6Blended, muddled, or ground to be mixed with another food; cooking time as per boiled.

Deleterious Effects

If the food is either poisonous or ill-prepared, roll on the following table to determine the effect. These results assume a saving throw type check, if used, has been failed.

1d6Deleterious Effect
1Heavy cramping and indigestion; the victim can only move at 1/4 speed and any physical challenges are rolled with disadvantage (ie. roll an extra die and take the lowest of the two results); lasts 2d3 hours.
2Gas; immediately roll a wandering creature check or random encounter; for the duration, there is no chance for surprise; reactions and morale towards the victim are rolled with disadvantage; lasts 2d3 hours.
3Bloating; for the duration, armor and clothes won't fit the victim; anything beyond loose tunics, blouses, pants, and shirts, will cause damage (1 for light armor, 2 for medium armor, or 4 for heavy armor) for every minute they are left on; lasts 2d6 hours.
4Psychosis; for the duration, the victim believes themselves to be the type of creature that they consumed; lasts 1d3 days.
5Cross-contamination: for the duration, the victim exhibits a physical feature of the creature that they consumed; it takes 1d3 hours for the feature to manifest; it is completely vestigial; at the end of the duration, on a roll of 1-in-6, the feature is permanent; lasts 1d3 weeks.
6Deadly; this was something the victim's kind was not meant to consume; they are dying; without medical attention, they will succumb to the poison in hours equal to their Constitution or similar score; during this time, any challenges they make are rolled with disadvantage (ie. roll an extra die and take the lowest of the two results).

Lingering Effects

These effects are unpleasant but not as damaging as deleterious effects. All of them last for 1d3 days. The mechanical implications are left to the Referee's discretion.

1d6Lingering Effect
1A foul smell follows the victim around.
2They hear a faint chittering sound in their ears.
3Normal food is tasteless.
4Everything tastes like metal.
5Their breath is awful.
6They sweat profusely.
